28′ 2008 Custom Trailerable Economy Coastal Cruiser
Fishing Boats ·
Description: January 2012 headline: "Gas prices rising, to top $4 a gallon this summer." ViVe is a 28' custom-built, trailerable, fuel-efficient, coastal cruiser that sleeps 2 adults and 2 children and is easily and economically driven at hull speed (6.5 knots) using only a lightweight, efficient 9.8 HP four-stroke outboard! ViVe (short for "Viajero Verde," which is Spanish for "green traveler") is longer, leaner, and significantly lighter than most cruising boats being built today because she was designed specifically for convenient, safe, comfortable, reliable, and extremely fuel-efficient tropical-weather cruising at displacement-hull (i.e., non-planing) speeds. On long-distance cruises (like the 1200-mile maiden cruise I made down the ICW from Georgetown, Maryland to South Florida in the Fall of 2008), ViVe sips less than 3/4 gallons of gasoline per hour at her efficient cruising speed of around 6 knots with her new 2011 9.8 HP Tohatsu outboard engine running at half throttle. By keeping the engine controls simple, reliable, and compact (i.e., manual pull-start and tiller steering), the portable (84 lbs.) outboard can do double duty as a dinghy engine while at anchor! Draft is only one foot with engine tilted up, allowing the boat to pulled up right onto the beach. Her removable rudder with wireless autopilot controller makes long distance traveling much more relaxing and stress-free. A large bimini top provides shade in the cockpit and can be stowed while underway to reduce windage. A Sunsei SE-8000 130-watt solar panel and Morningstar SunSaver Duo charge controller are used to recharge the large house battery bank consisting of four paralleled Lifeline AGM GPL-4D 210 amp-hour batteries. Electrics include 4 installed cabin fans, seven 12 VDC outlets, 700-watt inverter, LED running lights and anchor light, LED overhead lighting, and tiller autopilot. ViVe's foundation is a strong, light, efficient, and well-proven dory-style hull with ...view more
